Tree and Angry Sky
One of the things I love about photography is the need to creatively adapt to changing conditions. So, I shifted my vision from “golden hour” to “thunder storm” and started to look at how the storm clouds and rain changed the prairie landscape.
306 Sunset Tree II
In order to avoid rewriting my August 21 post, I’ll just say that this photograph was taken a few minutes after 306 Sunset Tree. The sun moves quickly when it is low in the sky. I had just enough time to photograph 306 Sunset Tree and hustle a few hundred feed down the road to capture this photograph.
306 Sunset Tree
Which one do you like better? For most, I suspect that the dramatic sunset colours will be the deciding factor. For a minority (myself included), the black and white version will be the most interesting. I enjoy the drama and the rich lines/textures emphasized in the black and white representation. Let me know in the comments which you prefer and, if you have a moment, why you prefer it.
Lonely Tree Out West
I just love the colour in this photograph. It looks even better full screen - check out my lonely tree gallery to see the full sized version. CLICK HERE to view on the GALLERY page.

When it is not cloudy, the January sky is a clean, rich blue. I tried to combine those elements into the Lonely Tree Series. Moving close to the tree allowed the trees strength and the pattern of its outstretched branches to contrast with the sky. For me, it is a way to show the kind of strength a living thing needs to survive in the cold, vast, Canadian prairies. I think that the tree was allowed to stand out of respect for that very strength.
