Equipment Reviews
Gordon Laing
Gordon Laing is a photographer and one of the premier equipment testers/evaluators online today. With his 18 years of experience, he offers reviews that strike a helpful balance between technical assessment and practical application. Visit Gordon Laing’s Camera Labs site.
Into vintage cameras? Gordon Laing’s other site, Dino Bytes, takes a look back at photography equipment from the early days of digital photography. An interesting site for collectors or for photographers looking for older-but-useful equipment as a way into digital photography.
Christopher Frost
Christopher Frost is a photographic equipment evaluator who concentrates on lenses. He offers comprehensive reviews that include careful assessment of lens performance and handling. I like the fact that Frost is open to all manufacturers, including the “big names” and the smaller brands that are working to get a foothold in the industry.
Chris Nicholls and Jordan Drake - PetaPixel
They are new to PetaPixel, but I’ve followed Chris and Jordan for many years. They offer detailed and practical reviews of all the latest cameras, lenses, and photography-related equipment. They know their stuff and present it with an eye to practical application and a bit of fun. What’s more, Chris and Jordan are from Calgary, Alberta and aren’t shy about their Canadian base.
Ted Forbes - The Art of Photography
I’ve followed Ted Forbes on his Art of Photography YouTube Channel for years. He produces equipment reviews, post-processing tutorials, bios of famous photographers, and more. Forbes is no slouch when it comes to the technical side of photography and has a deep knowledge of the science behind the equipment. What I appreciate most about his videos, however, is the fact that he looks at equipment from a photographer’s perspective. I enjoy his perspectives about how photography equipment affects the art of photography.
Ken Rockwell
Ken Rockwell is one of the original photography bloggers and YouTube reviewers. He offers practical reviews of all kinds of camera equipment. He’s a working photographer, so he provides some helpful information about the handling an usability of the equipment he reviews. He also includes sample pictures to show the capabilities of cameras and lenses. Since Ken has been at it for a long time, he offers helpful reviews of older equipment, incase you are looking at the second-hand market.
