Winter Leaf

Winter Leaf

Winter Leaf is an example of one of my favourite subjects in photography: something that is out of place. When subjects are in an unusual context the viewer becomes curious about why. This, in turn, leads to a closer look at the photograph before them. We’re used to seeing brown leaves on the ground or in piles, but we don’t often see them lying on the ice. Winter Leaf invites the viewer to enjoy the contrast in shape, contrast, and colour between the out-of-place leaf and its icy background.

Even though the leaf is a relatively small part of the photograph, its shape, colour, texture, and placement make it the dominant feature. I love the power of photography to make small things take-on a bigger than life visual presence.
